Upper GI Surgery
Expert surgery for stomach, oesophageal, and duodenal conditions. Specialising in anti-reflux surgery and minimally invasive techniques.
Expert Upper GI Surgery
Upper gastrointestinal surgery encompasses procedures on the oesophagus, stomach, and duodenum. Dr. Kwok has particular expertise in anti-reflux surgery and the management of complex GERD.
We prioritise minimally invasive techniques wherever possible, offering patients faster recovery, less pain, and shorter hospital stays. Laparoscopic anti-reflux surgery is now the standard approach for suitable patients.
For upper GI cancers, we work closely with oncologists and gastroenterologists to develop comprehensive treatment plans that may include chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery.
Our Approach Includes:
- Laparoscopic and minimally invasive surgery
- Comprehensive reflux assessment
- Advanced oesophageal function testing
- Multidisciplinary cancer care
- Enhanced recovery protocols
- Long-term follow-up and support
Surgical Procedures
Anti-Reflux Surgery (Fundoplication)
Surgical treatment for gastro-oesophageal reflux disease. The upper stomach is wrapped around the lower oesophagus to strengthen the valve and prevent acid reflux.
Hiatus Hernia Repair
Repair of the diaphragmatic defect allowing stomach to herniate into the chest. Often combined with anti-reflux surgery.
GIST Removal
Surgical excision of gastrointestinal stromal tumours from the stomach or oesophagus, often using minimally invasive techniques.
Oesophageal Procedures
Surgical treatment of oesophageal conditions including achalasia (Heller myotomy) and oesophageal diverticula.
Conditions We Treat
Gastro-Oesophageal Reflux (GERD)
Chronic acid reflux causing heartburn and regurgitation. Surgery may be indicated when medications fail to control symptoms.
Hiatus Hernia
Protrusion of the stomach through the diaphragm. Large or symptomatic hernias benefit from surgical repair.
Stomach Cancer
Surgical resection is the main curative treatment for gastric cancer. May involve partial or total gastrectomy.
Achalasia
A motility disorder of the oesophagus causing difficulty swallowing. Surgical myotomy provides long-term relief.
Duodenal Adenomas
Benign tumours of the duodenum that may require surgical removal, especially if large or at risk of malignancy.
Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumours (GIST)
Tumours arising from specialized cells in the GI tract. Complete surgical removal is the primary treatment.
